Fallas today
Fallas is an internationally known celebration in Valencia, the third biggest
city in Spain. However, there are Fallas in other Eastern Spanish towns as Alzira,
Dénia, Gandia, Xàtiva and Orihuela. Fallas starts on March 15th
and finishes on March 19th (it is called "Fallas week"), but from
March 1st you can find several interesting events in Fallas, particularly fireworks.
The Government of Valencia organizes a lot of Fallas' events, but in all each district Fallas' committees celebrate it in their own area. We are Falla Josep Maria Haro-Poeta Mas i Ros, a committee in the Marina District of Valencia. Each Fallas' committee has an adult queen (the "fallera mayor") and a junior queen (the "fallera mayor infantil"), and the city of Valencia itself has its own queens.
Fire is very important in Fallas. On March 15th, Valencia plants over 370 cardboard monuments on the streets. The name of each monument is "falla", and represents a satiric point of view of last events around the world with an excellent art quality. When day 19th arrives (Saint Joseph's day), fallas will burn about 12:00 am. Everyday from 15th to 19th there is a "mascletà", daylight fireworks which produce rhythmic noise. You can only see that kind of fireworks in Valencia. At nightime there are great colourful fireworks near the old bed of river Turia.
This is not all. Fallas has music everywhere and at all times, because Valencian people love it. You can also find flowers, great corridas (bullfighters) and fun every night, and more. If you visit Fallas, you will love it and you will love Valencia.
