Descubierto por Justus Erus, miembro del equipo de Meave Leakey en 199 en Lomekwi (Kenia). Su edad se estima entre 3'5 y 3'2 m.a.. El cráneo está distorsionado. El nombre de platyops significa el Hombre chato de Kenia.
Se sitúa entre el Australopithecus
afarensis y el A. africanus.
Este fósil presenta características similares con el fósil ER 1470 descrito por Lieberman en 2001.
