Pull up the processor FAN
|
First screw off the AGP card. To take the card out you'll have to pull up the clip shown in the photo towards de HD bay
|
Take out the two rear fans. To do so you'll have to press the clips shown in the photo.
|
There's no need to unplug those fans (those plugs are very weak!) as we have taken out te AGP card out
|
Unplug the two cable cords that conect de PSU with the motherboard. Beware of the clip in each plug
|
Use a short star screwdriver to unscrew the 2 screws holding the aluminium plate that covers de PSU.
|
Take the plate out of the case. This might be a little bit tricky to do. I got it out the way is shown in the photo
|
At last we got to the PSU! At this step plugging again de PSU to the mother board would help if you haven't discovered yet which of the fans is the noisy one. Use your finger to press the center of the supicious fan to see if the noise stops.
Keep in mind that you won't be able to hear where to noise comes once the PSU is out of the G5 box as you won't be able to power it on.
|
Unscrew the 4 screws located underneath the G5
|
In order to take de PSU out of the box you'll have to unplug the plug shown in the picture. It might be a little bit tricky to unplug (and to plug in afterwards)
|
Screw off all the screws in the box and also the noisy fan ones.
You can now open the PSU. In order to do that you'll have to push the upper plate towards the rear part (where de AC plug is). This might also be a little bit tricky.
|
This is my primal suspect!
Looking the PSU from the front side as we did in the last picture, the left fan is the one that is speed control enabled. In order to accomplish this, Apple provided it with a 3 cable plug. The right fan although being the same model only has a 2 cable plug.

A photo of an empiricist real noise comparison.
2 Apple ones in the left. Two different new models on the right. I bought more than one (I only need to replace one) to have more choices to make once I was at home. They can be found easily in an electronic supply shop, you could also try in a computer components shop.
Has to be said that at first sight they almost look the same until you look at the sticker.
Apple fans have a 2.4Watt power consumption (12V, 0.17Amper).
The ones I bought are:
- 1.68Watt (costed 3Dollars) - 2.7Watt (5Dollars).
The 1.68 Watt was the quietest one, but the air that blew wasn't by far as much as the one from Apple did. So I decided not using it.
The 2.7Watt blew more air and I found it quieter than the Apple's quietest one!! So this one was my choice to make the replacement.
|
JUST A SUGGESTION:
I didn't find a 3 cable fan in the shops to substitute my 3 cable noisy one. Then I realised that I already had one because the two cable Apple fan (which was the one I was going to leave in the PSU as it was quieter than the other) was 3 cable enabled. The only thing I had to do was to unweld the 3 cables from the noiser one and weld them to the quiter one.

Photo taken from my bed. Finally I can sleep in my bedroom!
One more thing!
If after all that process your G5 is affected from Kernel Panics every now and then try this tip (it worked for me)
Hold the Command+Option+O+F keys during startup. At the '>' prompt type: >reset-nvram Return >set-defaults Return >reset-all Return and your computer will resume normal startup.
